With the growing use of Internet, online businesses are becoming more and more successful day by day. Most of the share to make this happen goes to credit card payments. Payments through credit card have made business possible not only in local market but also in international markets too. Credit card payments also enjoy an upper hand over the cheque payments as there is no tension of cheque books or mailing out the cheques. Â
If you also one of the individuals doing business online and selling the products or services through your website then one of your major concerns must be “how to accept credit cards on your website?â€
Two of the possible ways out through which a credit card can be accepted on the website include holding a merchant account or through a third party merchant. For allowing the credit card payment through the merchant account, one requires a bank to open an account and as far as credit card payment through third party is concerned, there are various companies that help in accepting credit card payments. CCBill, CCNow, Clickbank, Digibuy, IBill, Kagi, PayPal, ProPay are some of the companies that charge some amount of fees and offer credit cards facilities.Â
However, the fluctuation of rates is significant, so a person should make a comparative and an extensive study before opting for any. Some of the companies will focus solely on hard goods while others consider all kinds of goods. The Paypal accepts the payment of credit card online devoid of any beginning fee. Similarly CCBill also does not charge for the set up. The fee for the transaction varies in accordance with the sales volume.

Credit Card identity theft is a major problem that has baffled credit card companies, users and the security agencies. Identity theft happens both online and offline. There are many ways that are used to get your identity. Hacking your identity online is one of the common methods used by hackers. They may steal information that you share with an airline company while booking your air ticket online. Preventing these scams are possible by sharing your credit card details only on sites which have secure systems in place that hackers cannot break into. In one of the recent large scale hacking of customer’s information, hackers broke into one of the servers of leading job site monster.com and stole data. Though, this was not credit card details but the privacy of thousands of probable job seekers fell into wrong hands. As end users we may take some precautions but servers which store data or networks through which sensitive information passes should be well protected.
The offline methods of stealing identity is more common and some of the methods used are stealing wallets, stealing mails, posing as legitimate entities and getting personal details from banks or other institutions, ‘dumpster diving’ or buying personal information from ‘inside’ sources. Offline methods can definitely be avoided and it is within the control of end users to take adequate precautions. Misuse of cards can include creating a new card and using it until you realize the fraud or taking new loans using your identity. The problem is not grave if you can take adequate precautions and informing your bank immediately if you notice any frauds.

Merchants have two options of processing debit cards. The first option is offline (signature based) and the second option is online (pin based). For online debit card processing the card should be branded either with VISA or MasterCard logo. The online processing of debit cards in done in the same way as a credit card. After the card details are entered the merchant service provider connects to the payment gateway of the bank for the processing. In an offline transaction the customer is asked for the pin number on the card. The customer enters the pin details on the Pin-Pad. The machine helps in connecting to the payment network and automatically authorizes the payment and produces a transaction. The entire transaction takes 3-4 second to complete but as an end-user we are not aware of the complex processes that go at the backend.
Customers should take note that entering the pin amounts to authorizing a transaction. The bank where customers have their accounts will recognize the pin number of the customer and debit the account as per the sale information. Merchants get their money within a period of 24 hours-48 hours and the process is faster than credit cards. The time frame may vary from country to country and the clearing mechanism in each country. In the United States the ACH process transfers the money directly into the account bypassing the payment networks used in processing credit card payments. As a merchant and an end-user we should have some knowledge of how the processing of debit card is done. This will help us to ensure a smooth and safe transaction.
